A-bombed Tree

Camphor tree
(Senda Park)
  3-8, Senda-cho, Naka-ku, Hiroshima (Senda Park)

(2017.5.3)
On the east side of Senda Park, along the road where the City General Health Center, Naka Ward Sports Center,
and Industrial Technology Center are lined up, there is a row of 22 camphor trees that survived the atomic bombing.

They were apparently planted in the grounds of the former Hiroshima Higher Technical School,
and the row of trees stretches for about 200 meters.
It is rare to find so many camphor trees remaining in a place that was hit by the bombing.
The camphor tree standing in front of the Sports Center entrance is heart-shaped.
It is unknown when the row of trees was planted, but they are probably around 100 years old.
However, despite that, they lack the grandeur typical of camphor trees,
and even considering they are street trees, they lack strength.
My first impression was that they were rather slender and weak for camphor trees.

Since it's the season for shedding leaves, you can see a variety of leaf colors,
from the red leaves before they fall to the new yellowish-green leaves.
There are also many buds to be seen.
